Tecate is the only magical town in the country that is located on the border with the United States, in Baja California. A town surrounded by forests, where it is inevitable, if you walk its streets, to let yourself be guided by the smells emanating from its artisanal kitchens and bakeries.
Tecate's location and connectivity make it a must-see destination for all travelers, regional and foreign, which has caused new businesses to open up, especially food businesses. This is how artisanal bakeries and several restaurants with interesting and innovative proposals emerged.
Tecate is forging its own path and writing its history, establishing itself as a gastronomic destination worth visiting.
Although the chefs and cooks of this town know that the gastronomic scene is several years behind compared to Tijuana, Ensenada or Mexicali, this does not worry them and much less affects them, on the contrary, it benefits them, because they have been able to receive incomparable teaching.
Tecate has always been renowned for its artisanal bread, considered one of the best in the country. It has become a tradition to stop by town and bring bread as a souvenir whether you go to Mexicali or Tijuana. Breads have evolved and you can find baguettes with dehydrated tomatoes, rosemary, olives, olive oil, aged cheeses, raisins, walnuts and Italian herbs, just to name a few. All the products with which they are made come from the same region, flour from Mexicali, oil from Valle de las Palmas, Tijuana; virgin butter from Real del Castillo, Ensenada; and dairy products from the town itself.
Now you know that if you visit Tecate, and we hope so, you should try their artisanal bread, both salty and sweet, both are a glory of this Baja California corner.
Along with the growth of bakeries, there are restaurants, food places and cafés that are betting on innovative cuisine, taking care to create their own proposals, using fresh seafood and fish, combined with ingredients from the region such as carrots, radishes, rosemary, pomegranates, tomatoes, eggplants, chilies and a clear influence of Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. It is important to mention that there are restaurants that are creating their menus, depending on the catch of the day and what the garden provides.
Among the dishes that attract the most attention of those who visit Tecate are “The 84 tacos” from El Lugar de Nos, by chef Mariela Manzano. They are four pieces prepared with meat cooked in its own juice over low heat for twelve hours. Another variant of these tacos are “Mushrooms 84”, which are mushrooms sautéed in olive oil accompanied by meat 84 and pecorino cheese, from the same place, “the octopus in love” in ginger and coriander vinaigrette or pickled tuna toast.
Like other municipalities, such as Tijuana or Mexicali, in Tecate there are more and more Food Trucks, offering the famous and delicious urban food. Grilled seafood tacos, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, wings, oriental dishes such as sushi, ramen, all with a personal touch and harmoniously fused with regional ingredients.
Craft beer is also taking a very important place in Tecate's gastronomic scene, even an internationally renowned brewery is named after the town, this has influenced some local producers, so you can also try good craft beer, as well as all over Baja California.
We cannot ignore the region's wine, the Tecate valleys are the northern gateway to the wine route, so it will be a delight if you can pair your meals with delicious Baja California wines.
